Choosing the Right Summer Camp

The first day of summer camp is getting closer and we couldn’t be any more excited! Choosing a sleepaway camp near Vermont can be extremely difficult. Hours of research and hundreds of websites but still nothing, we’ve been there. And now we are here to help! Here at Camp Half Moon, we want to help you find the perfect summer camp. Keep on reading for help choosing a summer camp for your son or daughter this summer!

  • First off, find the summer camp's philosophy. Are you comfortable with the summer camp’s goals or mission? If you don’t like what the camp stands for or what they aim to accomplish, move on to the next summer camp. Camp Half Moon aims to give children a structure to ground them and give them confidence to explore and grow while encouraging exploration and discovery.
  • Involve you children in decisions. One of the easiest decisions you can allow your child to make is to let them pick what summer camp activities they want to participate in. A typical day at summer camp should allow children to choose what they would like to do. If your son or daughter likes a specific sport or activity, make sure the summer camp is offering it this summer.
  • Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few summer camps, start visiting them. When you visit, make sure to look at the summer camp facilities and cabins. See if you are comfortable sending your son or daughter to live there for a few weeks. If not, move on to the next summer camp.
  • Talk to the summer camp staff. See if your child can meet one of the members of the staff. This will give them a chance to ask questions as well as have a familiar face at summer camp. If you can, meet with the staff member that would be your son or daughter’s counselor and express any concerns or questions you may have.
